Low Point Weight Watchers Muffins

Do you love to have a sweet, warm muffin with coffee as a yummy breakfast or sweet afternoon treat? This low calorie muffin recipe is just what you're looking for.

Making muffins with a cake mix is a WW classic trick because it comes together in minutes and the points are reasonable.

I like to make a batch of these muffins on the weekends and freeze them individually to have on hand all through the week. (Freezing them also helps me not be tempted to overeat them! As someone who is maintaining a 100 pound weight loss, I know it's important to keep treats available but out of sight.)

These muffins are so delicious that your family will enjoy them too, never guessing they are eating a lighter recipe.

WW 3 ingredient muffins in basket

Ingredients for WW Pumpkin Muffins with Cake Mix

This recipe couldn't be more simple. Here are the ingredients:

  • 1 box Spice Cake mix
  • 1 can (14 ounce) pumpkin. Be sure to buy plain pumpkin, not pumpkin pie mix which has added sugar.
  • 1 cup water

Whether you call these a 2-ingredient muffin or a 3-ingredient muffin, the result is the same – a tender, delicious muffin you will love.

WW Muffins with Sugar-Free Cake Mix

Can you make these ww pumpkin muffins with a sugar-free cake mix? Yes, you can easily adjust this recipe by using a sugar-free cake mix which does lower the points slightly.

With a sugar-free mix, each muffin is 2 points on WW Blue, Green, and Purple.

Since you probably won't be able to find a spice version of a sugar-free cake mix, use a vanilla cake mix and add 1 tsp cinnamon and 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice.

Cheater Ensuite Bathroom

Cheater Ensuite Bathroom

Since moving into our house, updating our cheater ensuite bathroom has been something I have been dreaming about doing (dreaming being the keyword). A complete reno is not in the budget this year, or for the next few unfortunately, however that can't stop me from putting together some ideas to try and update our bathroom on a budget!

This summer I am making an effort to update our bathroom with a few new touches and some serious DIYing. I'm hoping to work away on certain projects one at a time, and *fingers crossed* it all turns out! I will of course be blogging about each project and sharing it all with you so you can follow along. To help give a visual of my overall plans, I put together a design board.

A summary of my plans:

  • stencil the linoleum floor (I've seen quite a few blog posts on this method. See here and here. I'm thinking this could either go super well, or super bad and not going to lie, a little nervous to do this!)
  • update the outdated green vanity countertop with a paint kit (this one seems to have good reviews!) – DONE
  • update the finishes and handles with brushed or satin nickel (I may spray paint these instead) – DONE
  • frame the mirror (Pinterest has lots of blog posts on how to do this, like here and here)
  • update the light fixture (or again, I may spray paint)
  • repaint the walls

Before we get started, here's a look at the "before". (Speaking about getting started… I've yet to actually plan on when I'm going to start tackling these projects so hopefully this I get to it sooner than later!)

Right away you're greeted with a "lovely" green vanity countertop. Honestly, if this countertop wasn't green, this bathroom wouldn't be so bad to update.

Despite the flooring and outdated fixtures, and of course that green countertop, the bathroom is actually a great space. It has plenty of room and is quite functional. The best part is that behind those folded doors is our washer and dryer which makes doing laundry a little less of a hassle.

Here's a good shot of the vanity. It's very spacious, but I'd love to completely rip it out and replace it with a double sink and a granite or marble countertop, but that's not happening any time soon. I was also contemplating possibly painting the vanity (and maybe I will!), however I think the white will work once the countertop and hardware are updated.

A close up of the green counter – ahhh!

Of course Marty needs to be involved in all the action!

I want to add some shelving above the toilet and update those old handles with a new finish!

So there you have it! My bathroom in its current state, which is not awful but not something I'm in love with, plus my ideas on how I plan to transform this space on a budget! Stay tuned for when I actually decide to tackle these projects, and of course… wish me luck!

Bathroom Electrical Outlet Placement

Bathroom Electrical Outlet Placement

Learn the best places to install outlets in your home, from the kitchen to the bedroom

Does your home feel like a spider web of extension cords? Do your appliance plugs rotate through your single kitchen socket like a merry-go-round? You're not alone. The average American home has about 75 electrical outlets. The total number of outlets in a home is important. But so is their specific placement.

When deciding where to place electrical outlets in your home, remember this—all installed outlets need to meet strict electrical code requirements. We recommend working with a professional electrician in your area to ensure compliance and safety.

Ready to get started? Use our list of the best places to consider when installing outlets in your home as inspiration.

1. Living Room

The living room is where you should unwind, not an extension cord. Make sure you can power through a relaxing night by installing your living room outlets:

  • On every wall

  • Near the fireplace mantle (to display holiday decor)

  • In the center of larger rooms with furniture away from walls (to power lamps and charging stations)

  • Higher up on a main wall (to power a mounted television )

According to the National Electrical Code, an outlet must be placed every 6 feet along the floor line of any room with dedicated living space. Use this as a guide when determining how many outlets your living room needs for optimal functionality.

2. Bedroom

An outlet in the bedroom over the bedside table

When placing bedroom outlets, consider how many people will be using the room. Bedrooms sleeping two people likely need more outlets than a single sleeper bedroom.

Place bedroom outlets:

  • On every wall

  • Higher up on a main wall (to power a mounted television)

  • On each side of a bed (for nightstand appliances)

  • Inside a walk-in closet (for irons or clothing steamers)

Keep in mind that a bedroom is required to have at least one light source controlled by a switch. To maximize the functionality of a bedroom, consider installing switched outlets. These have one hot receptacle (always on) and one controlled by the room's switch. This can make it easier to control a room's lighting without turning off every device.

3. Bathroom

A double outlet over the bathroom sink

Water and electricity don't mix. For safety, all bathroom outlets must be ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI).

Consider placing bathroom outlets:

  • Near each sink (cords should never have to cross over a sink)

  • Inside medicine cabinets (electric toothbrushes charge off the counter)

  • Inside drawers (to charge hair tools and electric razors out of sight)

Knowing where to place outlets in your bathroom is important. But knowing where not to place outlets is equally valuable knowledge. Keep receptacles at least 6 feet away from showers and bathtubs. To prevent cords from getting wet, install outlets at least 1 foot to the left or right of a sink.

4. Kitchen

The heart of the home deserves extra attention when planning outlet placement. Make happy memories and delicious meals with ease by placing kitchen outlets:

  • Every 2 feet along each counter

  • Inside the pantry (for small appliances or cordless vacuum charging stations)

Unless you're building a custom accessible kitchen, outlets should never be placed more than 20 inches above a countertop. All outlets serving a countertop or appliance (like a dishwasher) must be GFCI outlets as well.

5. Home Office

The 2020 work-from-home surge made dedicated office space a must-have for most homeowners. For a neat and efficient workspace, home offices need outlets installed:

  • On every wall

  • At levels based on the height and clearance of workspaces, not necessarily uniform with other rooms in the home

  • Inside drawers and cabinets (to cut down on cord clutter)

  • With USB ports (for built-in device charging capabilities)

When your home office is a converted bedroom, be on the lookout for signs of an overloaded circuit. If your lights dim when the printer kicks on, you may be looking at more electrical work than just outlets. Speak to a professional electrician about updating your electrical panel if your office is having trouble keeping up.

6. Garage

Garages aren't only for storage. Make sure you can tackle your next DIY project by installing garage outlets:

  • On the ceiling for a garage door opener (unless the space is already hardwired for one)

  • Near parking stalls (to charge electric-powered vehicles )

  • Near workspaces (to operate small tools and stand-alone machines)

Recent updates to the National Electrical Code now require GFCI outlets in garages. Whether you're installing outlets for the first time or updating current outlets to meet the new requirements, it may help to know that garage outlets can boost your home's value and give your property an edge in a competitive market.

7. Outside

Spending 120 minutes outside per week can have positive effects on overall health and well-being. Make sure your outdoor living space is fully powered by installing outlets:

  • On every exterior wall (to power yard maintenance tools and holiday decorations)

  • On either side of the front door (for decorative lighting or security equipment)

  • Near outdoor living spaces (power lighting, heating elements, or entertainment equipment)

  • In the soffit (to hide wires from holiday lights or security equipment)

Because outdoor outlets will come into contact with Mother Nature, only GFCI outlets are permitted. Installing waterproof covers for outdoor outlets is also recommended.

As you design your dream outdoor space, look for covers designed to fit over extension cords. Just keep in mind that extension cords should be used for temporary holiday displays or to power tools for projects. Never use an outdoor extension cord as a permanent source of power.

Think Strategically About Where to Place Outlets in Your Home

Ready to eliminate the extension cord for good? Properly placed electrical outlets can help boost your home's functionality and aesthetics. It's always possible to add additional outlets down the road. But this can be a costly job that's best avoided with proper outlet placement during initial construction or a full-scale remodel.

Before going with a generic outlet layout, take some time to think about what's most important to you and your family.

Restaurant Bathroom Ideas

Restaurant Bathroom Ideas

Restaurant bathrooms seemingly fall into two categories.

They're either less-than-pristine and leave you just wanting to get in and get out fast, or they're an immaculate happy place with flattering lighting, trendy wallpaper and tiling, bougie soap and a selfie-ready mirror.

A restaurant's bathroom decor matters almost as much as what's being plated .

From the aroma to the lighting, we've put together a list of the details that take a restaurant bathroom from an unpleasant (but necessary) detour to one of the highlights of a diner's restaurant experience and skyrockets an establishment into Instagram stardom.

1. Funky wallpaper

Where: Al's Deli

Open in Google Maps

Chef Aaron London's Mission District deli knows that a restaurant's bathroom is an extension of its personality. Their tropical print wallpaper and gold gilded mirror is very much on-trend and makes diners want to take a picture and share their experience on Instagram.

2. Clean tiles

Where: Media Noche

Open in Google Maps

Bathroom tiles are a great way to add contrast to an otherwise loud, funky design. Just look at how Media Noche balanced its instantly recognizable banana-patterned wallpaper with clean, black-and-white tiles.

3. Soft lighting

Where: Marcus Four Seasons

Open in Google Maps

The last thing you want is for your bathroom's lighting to make it feel like an interrogation room. The best way to avoid that? Opt for softer lighting, just like Atelier Zebulon Perron did when designing the bathroom of the Montreal's Four Seasons Hotel restaurant, Marcus.

Rather than give off the vibe that you should get in and get out fast, Marcus' bathroom feels more like a luxe powder room.

4. Fancy handsoap

Where: Esiatorio Louka

Open in Google Maps

Brands like Aesop and Le Labo are the pricey handsoap of choice for trendy restaurants over the past few years. The whole point of dining out is to enjoy things that you can't have at home, and that now includes washing your hands with ultra-luxe products.

Aesop and Le Labo are special because each brand has cultivated an air of exclusivity, and that's entirely intentional. Aesop, for example, makes restaurants sign an agreement to display its soap prominently in the bathroom and not refill the bottles with cheaper products (otherwise Aesop will stop supplying that restaurant with its products).

Le Labo is equally picky about which restaurants it partners with. Estiatorio Louka in Beverly Hills is one of the approved restaurants with a corporate account. "They take pride in their brand and are cautious of making sure it is placed in companies they respect," says Estiatorio Louka co-owner, Theana Kotsiovos.

Le Labo even designed a custom metal bracket dispenser to keep restaurant guests from taking the coveted handsoap home with them.

5. Alluring scents

Similar to handsoap, bathroom candles and diffusers can be part of a restaurant's sensory experience.

Danu Kennedy, design director at hospitality interior design company Parts and Labor Design , likes to consider how scent works with all the other sensory elements. "We would want to tie in the scent to the overall aesthetic," says Kennedy.

Perhaps even more importantly, social media content is fixated on all things aspirational. Small touches, (like bougie candles) make diners feel like they're dabbling in everyday luxury.

Plus, everyday luxury items can convey all sorts of messages around your restaurant and the clientele you cater to (especially when captured in a bathroom selfie). Bougie candles like Byredo , Aesop, Dyptique and Le Labo can distinguish a bathroom and make it Instagram-worthy.

That user-generated content (UGC) can compel other customers to book online reservations and give the establishment a shot.

6. Next-level toilets

Where: Tempura Matsui

Open in Google Maps

Toto heated toilets have a ton of built-in bells and whistles (like bidets and ocean sounds) that helped them achieve cult status. Once you try one, everything else feels inferior by comparison.

When designing Tempura Matsui's bathroom, designer Shigeki Yoshimoto of Yoshimoto Architectural Design wanted to extend the Japanese vibes from the dining room to the bathrooms. To achieve that, they incorporated Japanese culture into every detail, from the wallpaper and ceramic sink to its coveted Toto toilet.

7. Public sinks

Where: Furco

Open in Google Maps

When it comes to preventing long lineups for the loo, public sinks are a game-changer. People can take f-o-r-e-v-e-r sprucing up in individual stalls, which is why public sinks like the one in Montreal hotspot Furco are so nifty. They look cool and they speed up bathroom breaks.

I mage source: Atelier Zebulon Perron

8. Next-level hand dryers

Speaking of speeding up bathroom breaks, if public sinks aren't an option, consider investing in high-powered commercial hand dryers. The Dyson Airblade is a popular choice for its minimal look and energy efficiency.

If you want to reduce your restaurant's overhead costs and utility bills while being as eco-friendly as possible, consider moving away from paper towels and installing hand dryers instead.

The appliances you choose can have a huge impact (for better or for worse) on your restaurant's profit margins .

9. Understand your clientele

Where: Habana Outpost

Open in Google Maps

One of the easiest ways to connect with customers is by playing to its clientele's sensibilities.

Habana Outpost is an eco-conscious, solar-powered Cuban cafe that knows its visitors care about the environment. As a result, they've gone above and beyond to make their commitment to sustainability obvious. For example,  their toilets flush using rainwater accumulated in a large outdoor tank.

10. When in doubt: Art

Where: Robin

Open in Google Maps

Robin is one of San Francisco's top omakase dining experiences. Its colorful, beautifully-plated sushi is almost like edible art, and its bathroom is art.

Dripping with watercolors and accented with gold and white, owner Adam Tortosa made sure that his restaurant was channeling beauty, both in plating and atmosphere.

11. Cleanliness

No amount of trendy decor, bougie candles or funky wallpaper can make up for a dirty washroom. Not only should your staff tidy up the restroom frequently during each service, but they must also wash their hands after each visit.

Hang up a sign in your restaurant bathroom that clearly states your establishment's policy: "Employees must wash their hands before returning to work." It gives each guest that visits your (cool) bathroom the confidence of knowing that you take food safety and hygiene seriously.

What Are Some Design Ideas for Small Bathrooms?

Redecorating the rooms in your home can bring some chaos, but it also brings a lot of excitement as you watch an entirely new look come to life in rooms that had become mundane and dated. The long-term enjoyment and satisfaction you get from a newly redesigned bathroom, for example, is more than worth the short amount of time you spend completing the work.

When you're decorating a particularly small bathroom — or any small room — you have to make the most of every bit of available space. From creating practical spaces to letting your design imagination shine through, you could take your new bathroom in many different directions. Let's take a look at some great design ideas for small bathrooms.

Go Bold with Wallpaper

Wallpaper may seem like a dated idea, but many of today's modern prints and designs look nothing like those blocky, geometric designs from days gone by. Bold prints and striking patterns that might look overwhelming in a larger space can really shine in a small bathroom. Choose an accent wall and decorate it with bright colors or a punchy pattern or go dramatic and wallpaper the entire bathroom in a textured print.

Keep Counter Lines Clean

If you have an ample budget, changing your bathroom counter can really change the entire feel of the bathroom. Choose a design that adds crisp, clean lines to the space. Decorative finishes and scalloped edges may seem fancy and tempting, but they can distract from the rest of the room and diminish your counter space. Additionally, patterned designs on the walls call for "non-busy" counters and accessories to avoid a cluttered feel.

Add a Design Element to the Ceiling

If decorating the walls isn't your style or you don't have a lot of open wall space, consider adding an eye-catching design element to the ceiling instead. Drawing visitors' eyes up to the ceiling helps create the illusion that your overall bathroom space is much larger than it actually is, according to Elle Decor.

Consider a Floating Sink

Okay, so maybe floating sinks don't really float, but these types of pedestal sinks with no surrounding counters almost give the impression they are really suspended in midair. This sink style allows you to eliminate bulky counters and cabinets by skipping the traditional bathroom vanity. If counter space isn't important to you, look for a modern floating sink with minimal plumbing to keep your walls and floor tidy.

Think Outside the Shower Stall

Traditional shower stalls and bathtubs take up a lot of valuable space in a tiny bathroom. If you've got the budget for a full replacement, consider turning your standard bathroom into a European-style bathroom with an open shower and drain on one end of the room, partially separated by a transparent sheet of laminated glass.

Try Hanging a Towel Bar

If you plan on keeping the counter and you need more counter space, hang a towel bar (or two) to free up space. These bars can hold standard hand towels or even full-size body towels in most cases. This use of vertical storage space saves some of your limited square footage for other uses. As a bonus, you can find plenty of towel bars with decorative designs to spruce up your walls as well.

Bring Some Natural Light In

One of the biggest problems in a small space is the lack of light, and dark rooms with poor lighting look not only dismal but also seem much smaller than they actually are. If your bathroom has a window, install decorative blinds or a window shade in a color and material that lets some natural light in, even when the blinds are closed or the shade is pulled down.

Photo Courtesy: Catherine Falls Commercial/Moment/Getty Images

Spring for an Oval Mirror

You know how funhouses always have halls and rooms with funky mirrors in them? The logic is simple — mirrors are great at creating optical illusions. Oval mirrors, in particular, create an illusion of height, and every mirror reflects both artificial and natural light to make rooms much brighter. Place an oval mirror over the sink or an open wall to add brightness and create the illusion of extra height in your small bathroom.

Use Ledges or Shelves for Storage

If you're completely remodeling your small bathroom, consider choosing a shower and tub enclosure with storage ledges in the walls. If your do-over isn't that extensive, you could hang shelves in the shower enclosure or above the sink. Ledges and shelves are great for storing shower and hair products that you don't want cluttering your counters.

Choose Flexible Storage Options

As much as you want to avoid clutter in a small bathroom, it's inevitable that you need certain items in the room. The storage items you choose are determined by the style choices you make throughout the room. If you opt for a pedestal sink, you might be able to slide a basket with fresh towels underneath it. If your shower doesn't have shelves, then look for a hanging shower caddy to drape over the shower head to hold your supplies. If you hang a shelf near your sink, pick up some cute containers to place on it to hold your toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush and other essentials.
